Box Score SAN DIEGO (Sept. 1, 2013) –The FIU men's soccer team put together a string of goals in the first and second half to defeat the San Diego State Aztecs on Sunday evening. The Panthers (1-1-0) had two newcomers score goals in the victory.
"This was a solid win on the road," said head coach Ken Arena. "We are obviously disappointed with the result on Friday. I though the guys learned valuable lessons and came back very determined. The early weeks are tough and we have to continue to be ready to grind out results."
The story for FIU was a five minute span that started in the 39th minute when freshman Josue Espana netted his first career goal. Then senior
Gonzalo Frechilla and junior
Quentin Albrecht scored back-to-back goals in the 42nd and 44th minute, respectively, to put the Panthers ahead 3-1.
In the second half, the Aztecs netted a goal to make it a 3-2. The Panthers responded with two consecutive goals in a 1:28 span to make it 5-2. Sand Diego State added a goal in the 86th minute, but FIU would hold on for a 5-3 victory.
The Aztecs got off to a quick start in the 11th minute when Jordan Ongaro netted a goal to give San Diego State a 1-0 advantage. From there, the Panthers answered with goals from Espana, Frechila and Albrecht in the 39th, 42nd and 44th minute. In the 42nd minute, Albrecht assisted Frechila and then Frechilla reciprocated and assited Albrecht in the 44th minute. FIU held a 3-1 lead at halftime.
Espana's 39th minute goal came from short distance on the right side. Frechilla's goal just moments later was gathered and shot from short distance, with Albrecht credited with the assist. Albrecht then followed with a header off the free kick from Frechilla.
In the second half, SDSU answered with a goal in the 51st minute, but two goals from
Sean McFarlane and
Luis Betancur would seal the victory for FIU.
The Panthers take on UCF this Thursday at UCF at 7 p.m. in Orlando.
