Box Score BOCA RATON, Fla. (Sept. 14, 2013) – The FIU men's soccer team opened Conference USA play with a 2-1 loss at Florida Atlantic on Saturday night.
Sophomore
Daniel Gonzalez scored FIU's lone goal in the 70th minute. The Panthers controlled the game on the attacking end all night, outshooting the Owls 9-3 in the contest and earning seven corner kicks compared to FAU's two.
In the first half, the Owls jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute, as Daniel Montoya found the lower left corner of the net on an assist by Deniz Bozkurt. In the second half, Bozkurt came back and recorded his second and third point of the night on a goal in the 61st minute.
FIU cut into FAU's lead when Gonzalez netted his first goal of the season in the 70th minute, as the sophomore looped the ball into the right corner of net to put the Panthers on the board. Five of FIU's nine shots came in the second half, as the Panthers outshot the Owls 5-1 in the second stanza.
FIU will open up the 2013 regular season home schedule with contests against North Florida (Sept. 20) and Jacksonville (Sept. 22). The Panthers will then hit the road for the next two games up north at Princeton and Penn before returning home on October 6 to host Marshall in their second C-USA contest.
