@FIUMensSoccer Blanks Jacksonville, 2-0

Box Score MIAMI (Sept. 22, 2013) – The FIU men's soccer team (3-4-0, 0-1-0) used two goals late in the second half to shut out the Jacksonville Dolphins on Sunday evening at the FIU Soccer stadium, 2-0. Freshman Marvin Hezel was responsible for the game-winning goal, while junior Colby Burdette gave the Panthers some insurance with a goal in the final minute.

"It feels great to get our first shutout of the season," said head coach Ken Arena. "We have played this well before, but it was really important for this team to get a shutout. Winning games gives us confidence and hopefully this gives us a boost heading into our games with Princeton and Penn."

The Panthers were dominant on the offensive end, especially in the second half when Jacksonville had two players sent off with red cards. With the two-man advantage, FIU out-shot Jacksonville, 15-2, in the second half and 23-7 for the game. Additionally, the Panther pressure allowed for 12 corner kicks, while the
Dolphins were held to just one. Redshirt sophomore Daniel Mion made five saves in goal to earn his first victory of the 2013 campaign.

With the game tied in the 78th minute, the Panthers were rewarded a corner kick. Senior captain Gonzalo Frechilla perfectly found Hezel's head to give the Panthers a 1-0 advantage. The goal for Hezel was the first of his career, while the assist for Frechilla gave him a team-leading three on the year.

FIU's second goal came with just eight seconds remaining in the contest. Freshman Josue Espana connected a pass to fellow junior teammate Sean McFarlane. McFarlane placed a low cross to the right side of the box, where he found Burdette who connected for his 12th career goal in a Panther uniform.

FIU now turns to a two-game road trip to the Northeast, beginning with Princeton this Friday at 7 p.m. The Panthers will then travel down to Penn on Sunday for a noon contest, before returning home to face Marshall on Oct. 6.
