MIAMI, FLA. (FIUSports.com) – FIU senior Shelby Coyle (Pembroke Pines, Florida) enters Tuesday's second round at the Old Waverly Invitational tied for fourth place overall at an one-under par (71) after 18 holes on Monday. Hosted by Mississippi State and played at the Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Miss., the Panthers are in fourth overall after the first round among the 11 schools competing in this year's event. FIU was six-over (294) on the day.
Host school Mississippi State is atop the team and individual leaderboard. The Bulldogs sit eight strokes ahead of second-place East Carolina at seven-under-par (281). MSU's Ally McDonald is the leader in the clubhouse at five-under par (67). She is followed by teammate Jessica Peng at three-under (69). The Pirates are one-over (289) and two strokes ahead of third-place Georgia State (+5, 293).
All five FIU starters are among the top half of the draw, as Coyle is followed by sophomore Meghan MacLaren (Cambridge, United Kingdom) and freshman Coralia Arias (Quito, Ecuador). Both are tied in 18th at two-over (74). Sophomore Sophie Godley (Notinghamshire, United Kingdom) is tied for 22nd at three-over (75), one stroke ahead of sophomore Carla Jane (Santiago, Chile), tied for 29th at four-over (76).
Nestled in the heart of the Golden Triangle, Old Waverly is no stranger to premier golf events. The club has hosted numerous events on its championship course, most notably the 1999 U.S. Women's Open. Old Waverly has also hosted the men's and women's SEC Championship, Southern Golf Association Women's and Junior Championships, and the 2006 U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Championship.
Designed by U.S. Open winner Jerry Pate and Bob Cupp, the course has been named to Golfweek's Top 100, Golf Digest's Top Course In Mississippi, and Golf Digest's Top 100 courses.
