MIAMI (Dec. 30, 2014) – Double-figure scoring efforts from
Kiandre'a Pound, Destini Feagin,
Taylor Shade and
Marita Davydova helped lead the FIU women's basketball team past the Bowling Green Falcons, 68-55, on Tuesday evening from Lime Court at FIU Arena. With the win, FIU heads into the New Year 3-8 on the season.
FIU outrebounded the Falcons, 45-42, and got 18 points off 14 BGSU turnovers. Pound led the way, recording her fifth double-double of the season thanks to 20 points while shooting 50.0 percent (9-of-18) from the field and pulling down 14 rebounds, one shy of her career-high. Feagin notched a new season-high 15 points, while adding four rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block. Shade finished with 14 points, and Davydova rounded out the bunch with 12.
The game began with both teams exchanging baskets in the first two minutes of play, but the Panthers used a small run to pull ahead by six with just under 15 minutes to play in the first that forced BGSU to use a 30-second timeout. Despite the break, FIU continued to extend its lead to 10 by way of a Feagin three-pointer with at the 11:52 mark. The Panthers held strong and kept its double-digit lead for the majority of the first, extending it to 13 twice; however, the Falcons headed into the locker room on a 12-5 run, putting the score at 34-27.
Bowling Green opened the second going on a 5-0 run, holding FIU without a field goal for the first four minutes of the half. With the once 13-point lead that was now a two-point lead, Shade stepped and nailed a critical three that sparked a 9-0 Panther run, which put their lead back to double-digits. The Falcons pulled back within four midway through the half, but another critical Shade jumper sparked another FIU offensive run that eventually gave way to a 16-point lead with 5:05 left to play. The Panthers held the lead for the remainder of the way as they prevailed 68-55.
FIU enters 2015 on Sunday, Jan. 4, when it opens up conference play against in-state rival Florida Atlantic. The game is slated for 6 p.m. from Lime Court at FIU Arena.
