FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 18, 2014) – Led by freshman Camila Serrano's school-record-tying 8-under, 208, the FIU women's golf team claimed the 2014 Amelia Island Collegiate title with team score of 859 on Tuesday; 12 strokes ahead of second place Kennesaw State (871).
The Panthers notched a school-record low 859 on the par-72 Amelia National Golf Club in Fernandina Beach, Fla., besting 13 other schools for FIU's first tournament title of the year.
Serrano claimed medalist honors, registering a career-best, 8-under, 208. The Bogota, Columbia, native ended the day tied with Daytona State's Tiffany Chan, but won the tournament crown making par four-straight times on the 18th hole in a playoff.
The Panthers came into the day with a 13-stroke lead having dominated the field through the first two rounds, including a school-record 277 in the opening round of the tournament. FIU paced itself in the third and final round with a 12-over, 300, holding onto a double-digit advantage throughout the day.
Along with Serrano, three other Panthers finished in the top 25; sophomore Meghan MacLaren (1-under, 215; 4th); sophomore Sophie Godley (even-par, 216; 5th); senior Shelby Coyle (4-over, 220; T-11th).
