BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (March 22, 2014) – The FIU softball team (19-12, 2-3) dropped a pair of contests to the UAB Blazers Saturday afternoon from the UAB Softball Stadium. The two teams will close out the series tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. ET.

Game One: UAB 10, FIU 0

Facing a two-time 2014 C-USA Pitcher of the Week, redshirt freshman Dani Mowry went 2-for-2 against Leigh Streetman in her fourth shutout of the season.

The Blazers started the game with a lead-off triple and went on to plate three runs in the bottom of the first. A two-run home run from Kristen McGrath added to her second place total within the conference. FIU's best chance came in the top of the second. Junior Krystal Garcia beat out an infield single to start the frame, and in the middle of a 14-pitch at-bat from sophomore Aleima Lopez, stole her sixth bag of the season. Lopez would single up the middle on the fourteenth pitch she saw, which was followed by a single from Mowry, but both runners were left stranded.

A five-run second inning put UAB up 8-0 after two complete. Back-to-back home runs from Heather Pearson and Megan McGrath highlighted the Blazer damage in the half inning. Senior Mariah Dawson took over in the circle after two innings, replacing junior Shelby Graves (8-6), who got tagged with the loss, allowing eight runs on seven hits.

Game two: UAB 5, FIU 2

Sophomore Corinne Jenkins pitched five strong innings in game two, as she allowed only one run heading into the sixth inning. The Sarasota, Fla., native falls to 10-4 on the season, and allowed just five hits until the Blazers put up a four-spot in the sixth inning off four hits.

After hitting a two-out solo home run in the top of the first, Jenkins was able to get McGrath to foul out to first after jamming her inside, ending a bases loaded threat in the second. Jenkins retired 10-straight batters until back-to-back walks and a hit-by-pitch loaded bases again for UAB. A 6-3 putout ended the treat, keeping the score 1-0 after five complete.

FIU was not able to push any runs across through six frames, going down 1-2-3 on four separate occasions. Senior Bre Kaye was able to disrupt Lannah Campbell's no-hit bid with two outs in the top of the third, as the Glendale, Ariz., native was the lone Panther to record a hit until the top of the seventh. Freshman Stephanie Texeira led off the seventh with an infield single, and freshman Gabby Spallone was able to take two bags off an E-4, pushing Texeira to third. With two in scoring position, Garcia drove in Texeira on an RBI single. The Panthers would plate one more run in the inning, but that would be it.
