MIAMI (April 12, 2014) – The FIU softball team (27-15, 9-5) swept a Saturday doubleheader against the UTSA Road Runners, posting a 5-0 and 4-3 victory. Senior Bre Kaye finished with three stolen bases, reaching 20 for the first time in her career. She now sits alone in third place within Conference USA in that category, while freshman Gabby Spallone drove in three runs on two doubles in the night cap. Sophomore Corinne Jenkins set a new career high in wins (14) and picked up the fifth save of her career, which moves her into fourth place in program history.
Game One: FIU 5, UTSA 0
Jenkins picked up win number 14 for the season, which is a new season-best for the Sarasota, Fla., native, who had a Sun Belt freshman best 13 wins in 2013. She struck out a season-best seven in the game. Kaye went 3-for-3 for the second time in three games, upping her season average to .327. She also picked up two more stolen bases, upping her season total to 19.
Three first inning walks loaded the bases for the Panthers. Sophomore Aleima Lopez gave FIU an early 2-0 lead off a single just out of the reach of the Road Runners' shortstop. The Panthers were able to manufacture a third run in the second inning. Kaye singled on the first pitch she saw and following a stolen base and ground out, stood at third base with two outs. Freshman Stephanie Texeira earned her second walk in as many at bats and stole second three pitches later, which drew a throw from UTSA's catcher. Kaye took home on the play for her second thievery of the inning.
Jenkins was dealing through five innings, not allowing a Road Runner to get past second base and registering a pair of two strikeout frames, while surrendering just three hits. She got tagged with back-to-back base hits in the sixth and a two-out walk eventually loaded the bases. The sophomore picked up her seventh punch out on the next batter, stranding all three UTSA runners.
FIU tacked on two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Kaye picked up her third hit of the game and junior Rebekah Sanchez also singled to put two on for junior Shelby Graves, whose ground out scored Kaye. Texeira then singled through the right side, upping her team-best in RBI to 32 for the season.
Game Two: FIU 4, UTSA 3
Spallone gave the Panthers a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning as she roped a one-out double to deep center field, which plated Sanchez and Graves. UTSA got two runs back in the third inning, but that would be it as Graves struck out the side. Spallone picked up her second double of the game in the third inning, driving in Texeira, who single through the right side on the first pitch she saw.
UTSA threatened again in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded and the nation's home runs leader at the plate, Graves was able to get Megan Low, who homered in the third inning, to foul out to third base.
Inheriting a two-on, one-out situation in the sixth inning, Jenkins came in for relief of Graves and picked up two pivotal strikeouts, one of which came with the bases loaded. Junior Krystal Garcia turned a 6-3 double play in the seventh inning, although the Road Runners plated one on the play. Jenkins finished the game with her third strikeout.
FIU goes for the sweep tomorrow at noon.
