ORLANDO, Fla. (Aug. 29, 2014) – In its second match of the Radisson UCF Invitational, the FIU volleyball team (1-1, 0-0 C-USA) suffered a tough, 3-2 (25-18, 25-16, 24-26, 25-18, 11-15), loss to the Northeastern Huskies.
Three Panthers tallied double-digit kill figures as junior
Lucia Castro paced FIU with a team-high 16 kills. Senior
Martyna Gluchowicz and freshman
Jennifer Ene added 12 and 10, respectively. Ene made her presence known hitting .333 (10-3/21) and posting five blocks. Castro and Gluchowicz also notched double-doubles, as the Ponce, Puerto Rico native added a team-best 17 digs to her 16 kills and the Polish right-side hitter contributed 13 digs. Sophomore
Anabela Sataric had a match-high 45 assists, while junior
Adriana McLamb added 15 digs.
FIU controlled the first two sets from start to finish, closing out the Huskies, 25-18 and 25-16. The Panthers' defense held Northeastern to a .069 (6-4/29) hitting clip in the first set. In the second frame of play, the Panthers had a .276 (10-2/29) hitting percentage, while holding Northeastern to a .128 (13-8/39) mark.
The third set was extremely tight, as it featured 15 ties and seven lead changes. Neither team gained more than a two-point lead throughout the set. Late attack errors plagued the Panthers in the end as they fell, 24-26. From there, FIU could not regain its focus and fell in the next two sets, 18-25 and 11-15. The Huskies outhit the Panthers .387 (16-4/31) to .290 (13-4/31) in the fourth set and .167 (7-4/18) to .143 (5-8/21) in the final frame of play.
FIU was held to a .162 hitting percentage, as the Huskies collected 12.5 blocks in the match. Despite not having one player post double-digit kill figures, the Northeastern offensive attack was well balanced. Three huskies collected nine kills and three more tallied eight. All-CAA selection Jamie Bredahl posted a double-double with 28 assists and 13 digs and two-time CAA Defensive Specialist of the Year Natalia Skiba recorded a match-best 33 digs.
FIU wraps up play in the Radisson UCF Invitational tomorrow when it takes on Eastern Kentucky at 11 a.m. ET and then UCF at 7 p.m. ET from the Venue.
