MIAMI (Sept. 19, 2014) – Senior striker
Quentin Albrecht lifted FIU (2-3-1) over 25
th-ranked San Diego State on Friday night, netting the game-winning goal in overtime. Albrecht's goal was a bicycle kick, his second goal of the game, as FIU rallied from a 1-0 deficit.
With FIU trailing 1-0 in the 84
th minute, Albrecht knotted the game up at one with his second goal of the season on a beautiful pass into the box from senior
Roberto Alterio. With Albrecht making a straight-run into the box, Alterio played a ball forward to the Germany native, who headed it in to finally give FIU a score it deserved, as the Panthers outshot the Aztecs 25-14 on the night, with 11 shots on goal.
Redshirt freshman
David Mitchell was strong in goal for the Panthers, making six saves on the evening, including a great leaping save late in the second half that would have been the deciding goal for San Diego State.
Early in the contest San Diego State and FIU each exchanged good looks on hard shots. Just 40 seconds into the match, San Diego State's Forrayah Bass fired a shot on goal that Mitchell made a save on. Senior
Roberto Alterio countered at 10 minutes in to give FIU its first close chance on the night, striking a ball from just outside the top of the 18, hitting it near post where SDSU keeper Adam Allmaras made a save. Moments later, Mitchell made another nice stop on a shot from Pablo Vasquez.
The Aztec goal came in the 39
th minute, as David Olsen was credited with his fifth goal of 2014. Mitchell came off his line, but the ball took a bad bounce past him allowing Olsen to finish it off.
The Panthers did apply an aggressive attack near the end of the half. FIU did get three shots on goal in the half. Albrecht gave the Panthers a great chance in the final minutes of the first stanza, breaking loose but striking the ball just wide of the net.
The second half was all FIU, as the Panthers outshot the Aztecs 14-6. Albrecht had five shots on goal in the 89 minutes he played.
FIU is next in action on Wednesday, as it hosts Florida Gulf Coast.
