@FIUVolleyball Opens Crimson-White Tournament with a Straight Set Loss to Alabama

Panthers continue action in the Crimson-White Tournament tomorrow afternoon versus Clemson and San Diego State

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (Sept. 19, 2014)
- The FIU volleyball team Alabama, 3-0, on Friday afternoon in the first match of the Crimson-White Tournament. FIU is now 3-9 on the season, while Alabama improved to 10-2.

The Panthers were out-hit by the Crimson Tide, who landed 42 kills on a .245 hitting percentage to FIU's 27 kills on .095 mark. FIU is now 1-9 when being out-hit by the competition and 2-8 when hitting below .200.

Junior Gloria Levorin led the attack for FIU, tallying nine kills off a hitting clip of .438 (9K-1E/16TA). Freshman Lea Montavon and junior Lucia Castro contributed seven and six kills, respectively. Sophomore Anabela Sataric dished out 22 assists and added three digs, two kills and a solo block.
Defensively, the Panthers totaled 38 digs and 4.0 blocks on the afternoon. Junior Adriana McLamb led the Panthers with 12 digs, and Montavon and Castro also added seven digs apiece.

In the first set, the teams remained close and FIU lead at the beginning to the match, 5-3. After Alabama tied the match up at five apiece. The two teams exchanged points over the course of the frame until the Crimson tide slowly started to pull away at the end after scoring three consecutive points taking the first set, 25-19, to take a 1-0 lead.

Alabama got off to a fast start, taking 12-4 lead and eventually extending it to an 11-point advantage in the second frame. The closest the margin the Panthers pulled to was seven points when the score was 23-16.

FIU saw some momentum building in the third set when it held its own once again. It was extremely tight early on as neither team led by as many as two points midway through the frame, but errors handed the lead back to Alabama as the Crimson Tide used a 11-6 run when the match was tied to take a five-point advantage. FIU would not go down quietly pulling back within two, but eventually fell in the final set 25-22.
