BOCA RATON, Fla. (Jan. 24, 2015) – The women's basketball team dropped a 77-63 decision at Florida Atlantic from FAU Arena on Saturday. With the loss, the Panthers drop to 3-14 overall and 0-6 in Conference USA play, while the win lifts the Owls to 9-8 on the season and 3-3 against league opponents.
Redshirt freshman
Kiandre'a Pound scored in double-figures for the third-straight game to lead FIU in scoring with a career-high 29 points, while senior
Marita Davydova was just shy of double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds. Also contributing double-figure scoring digits was junior
Taylor Shade with 11. Florida Atlantic was led by sophomore Shaneese Bailey who had 25 points.
For the game, FIU was 38.1 percent (24-of-63) from the floor, while FAU hit 50.0 percent (34-of-68) of its attempts. The Panthers out-rebounded the Owls, 45-42, but only had 15 second chance points. In addition, 50 of the Owls' 77 points came in the paint.
Both teams opened the game exchanging the first couple of baskets until the Owls went on a 8-0 run over a two minute span to take an 11-5 lead at the 15:12 mark. FAU kept its lead for the rest of the half, pulling ahead by as many as 21 with 2:33 left. After remaining scoreless for almost four minutes, the Panthers headed into the locker room on an 11-2 run as they pulled back with 14 after Shade hit a long three as time expired.
After the Panthers hit the first basket of the half, the Owls responded with a basket of their own. FIU seemed to get a groove going as it pulled within 12 with 18:33 left to play, but for every basket the Panthers made, FAU responded and kept the double-digit lead. FIU pulled back within 12 at the 5.24 point and had multiple chances to close the gap, but could not convert on a field-goal attempt for over three minutes. The Panthers pulled back within 12 with about 1:31 remaining, but again could not take advantage of the opportunities on offense.
FIU returns to Miami for the first of two consecutive home games when it hosts Old Domination on Thursday, Jan. 29. The game will tip off at 6 p.m. from Lime Court at FIU Arena.
