IRVING, Texas (Nov. 10, 2015) – Conference USA announced its 2015 men's soccer all-conference teams and post-season awards on Tuesday and FIU's
Scott Calabrese was named the C-USA Co-Coach of the Year while five Panthers earned all-conference honors.
Junior
Marvin Hezel was named First-Team All-C-USA, while senior
Daniel Gonzalez, junior
Ismael Longo and junior
Luis Betancur each earned second-team recognition. Steffen Böhm was a unanimous decision for C-USA All-Freshman Team honors.
In the team's second season under Calabrese, FIU (9-6-1) finished the regular season with a record over .500 for the first time since 2005. Earning the No. 5 seed in this year's C-USA tournament, the Panthers returned to the league's post-season tournament for the first time since 2007. Earlier this season, FIU cracked the top 25, earning a ranking as high as No. 14. The Panthers knocked off No. 9 Old Dominion (2-1 on 10/17) and defeated No. 22 Florida Gulf Coast (2-1 on 10/20) in Ft. Myers, Fla. Having a high-powered offense in 2015, FIU averages 2.06 goals-per-game (No. 14 in the nation).
Hezel appeared in all 16 games for the Panthers as a defender, starting in 14. The native Waldshut, Germany, recorded two goals and two assists for six points on the year. Hezel has totaled eight shots on the season with four SOG (50 percent SOG). He registered three points (1g, 1a) in FIU's 5-1 win over Marshall (9/26) and notched his first goal of the season during the Panthers' 7-2 win at Florida Atlantic (9/21). As the anchor of the Panthers' back line, he has helped FIU recorded a 1.29 goals-against-average, including a pair of shutouts.
Gonzalez appeared in all 16 games for the Panthers at midfield, starting in 13. He finished the 2015 regular season second on the team in points with 12 (5g, 2a). The Miami native, is currently No. 2 on the team in goals scored (5) and ranks No. 9 in C-USA in points. He leads the team with 45 total shots, averaging 2.81 shots-per-game (No. 5 in C-USA). Gonzalez also leads the team with 18 shots on goal. He has recorded multiple points in four games, including two goals for a season-high four points at FAU (9/21). Gonzalez also notched three points versus Penn (9/10), scoring a goal and registering an assist.
Longo appeared in 15 games for the Panthers as a midfielder, starting in 12. The Weston, Fla., product has recorded two points (two assists) on the year. Longo has 11 shots on the year with four on net. He helped FIU receive a ranking as high as No. 14 this season as the Panthers have held the opposition to 1.29 goals-per-game. On the offensive side, Longo assisted on the game-tying goal in FIU's 2-1 OT win at No. 22 FGCU (10/20) and recorded his first point of the season with an assist against Marshall (5-1 FIU win – 9/26).
Betancur appeared in 13 games for the Panthers at forward, starting in eight. The Parkland, Fla., native leads the team in points (14) and goals (7). He has recorded four game-winning goals on the year (No. 15 in the nation) and ranks No. 6 in C-USA in total points. He recorded FIU's first hat trick since 2005 during the Panthers' 7-2 win at FAU (9/21) en route to Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week honors. Betancur was an important part of FIU's seven-match winning streak during the season (9/3 – 9/29), recording the game-winner in three-straight matches (9/21 – 9/29). He is fourth on the team in total shots (20), with 10 of those shots on net. He has converted 70 percent of his shots on goal into scores.
Böhm appeared in 15 games as a defender for the Panthers, starting in 12. The native of Duisburg, Germany has recorded one point this season, while recording seven shots on the year with two on net. In his first year with the Panthers, B
öhm was a solid addition to the back line as FIU has held the opposition to 1.29 goals-per-game. Bohm recorded his first-collegiate point with an assist during FIU's 7-2 win at Florida Atlantic (9/21).
The Panthers will face Old Dominion in the first round of the 2015 C-USA Men's Soccer Championship on Wednesday, Nov. 11. First touch is set for 2 p.m. from Charlotte, N.C.
