MIAMI (Dec. 4, 2015) – The FIU women's basketball team (2-4) defeated the UMass Lowell River Hawks (1-6), 71-68, on Friday evening from Lime Court at FIU Arena.
Three Panthers scored in double figures led by junior
Janka Hegedus, who registered 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Junior
Tianah Alvarado posted 16 points on 5-of-14 shooting (3-of-5 from beyond the arc) with a team-high three steals. Freshman
Kristian Hudson added a career-high 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting (2-of-2 from downtown).
Shooting 41.7 percent (25-of-60) from the floor, FIU drained nine 3-pointers in the game, out-scoring the River Hawks, 33-30 in the second half. Despite being out-rebounded, 41-27, for the game, the Panthers used an 11-4 run in the final three minutes of action to seal the victory.
The game was knotted at 38-all as both teams entered halftime. For FIU, Hegedus and Hudson posted 10 points each as the Panthers shot 53.8 percent from the floor. The River Hawks scored 24 points in the paint and out-rebounded FIU, 18-9.
Seven different Panthers scored at least two points and grabbed at least one rebound in the contest as FIU snapped a four-game losing skid.
The Panthers will next travel to Jacksonville on Sunday, Dec. 6, to take on the Dolphins. Tipoff is scheduled for noon ET.
