MIAMI (Feb. 14, 2015) – The FIU baseball team (1-1) suffered its first loss of the season, falling to No. 25 Tennessee, 9-2, on Saturday evening at the FIU Baseball Stadium.
The Panthers committed seven errors in the loss, including a combined four in the fifth and sixth innings, resulting in six runs for the Volunteers.
FIU recorded two runs on eight hits in the contest. Freshman
Mitchell Robinson went 3-for-4 with a run scored versus Tennessee. Senior
Josh Anderson also had a multiple-hit night, going 2-for-4, including his first home run of the season.
Freshman
Garrett Cave suffered the loss in his first collegiate start, allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits, while striking out five in four innings of action.
Tennessee's Drake Owenby picked up the victory, tossing six shutout innings. The left-hander struck out seven Panther batters, while allowing just three hits.
The Volunteers scored nine runs on eight hits and were led by A.J. Simcox, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Vincent Jackson and Nathaniel Maggio each had two of the Vols' seven RBI.
UT jumped out to a 9-0 lead with runs in the first, third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. The Panthers got on the board with Anderson's solo shot to left-center field in the bottom of the seventh. FIU added a run in the bottom of the ninth as junior
Austin Rodriguez notched his first RBI as a Panther, driving in Robinson from third. That was all the scoring that FIU could muster, falling 9-2.
The Panthers and Vols will face off in the series' rubber match on Sunday, Feb. 15. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will feature sophomore
Chris Mourelle (RHP – FIU) versus Kyle Serrano (RHP – UT).
