HATTIESBURG, Miss. (March 15, 2014) -- Southern Miss needed one inning to defeat FIU and take the Conference USA series Sunday at Pete Taylor Park in Hattiesburg. The Golden Eagles batted around in the bottom of the sixth inning and scored 10 times to defeat the Panthers, 10-0, in seven innings. The game ended early due to the 10-run rule in Sunday conference games.
The Golden Eagles (11-7-1, 2-1 C-USA) collected nine hits and 10 runs in the sixth, including two two-run triples by Daniel Keating. USM had a program-record three triples in the sixth inning after Matt Durst had an RBI three-bagger.
FIU (9-11, 1-2 C-USA) had just four hits in the game. All the safeties were singles.
After pitching five scoreless innings and allowing two hits,
Chris Mourelle (3-2) took the loss when he surrendered five of the 10 runs in the sixth.
FIU finishes its six-game road trip at USF Wednesday with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch in Tampa. The Panthers open a three-game home series against Charlotte Friday, March 20.?
