FIU Women’s Tennis Wins Second-Straight; Downs FGCU, 6-1

MIAMI (March 2, 2015) – The FIU women's tennis team (4-5) earned its second-straight victory and eight-straight home win, downing Florida Gulf Coast (2-8), 6-1, on Monday afternoon from the FIU Tennis Courts.
 
FIU took an early 1-0 lead, as the duo of senior Yana Koroleva and sophomore Nina Nagode defeated Sarah Means and Elizabeth Means, while freshman Nerma Caluk and sophomore Valentina Briceno topped Johanna Sterkel and Julianna Curtis, 6-4.
 
The Panthers tacked on four more points to take a 5-0 lead, with singles wins by Koroleva (6-2, 6-1 over S. Means), Briceno (7-5, 6-1 over Alex Landert), junior Kaitlin Brozovich (6-2, 3-2, retired versus Candela Munoz Giron) and Nagode (6-2, 6-4 over E. Means).
 
The Eagles claimed a point as Caluk fell to Sterkel, 6-2, 6-3. Junior Carlotta Orlando closed out the match with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Stampfli.
 
The Panthers will next host Southern Miss on Tuesday, March 10. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
