BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Mar. 7, 2015) – Senior
Zsofia Labady pulled down a season-high 11 rebounds, one shy of her career-high, on Saturday in a 72-56 loss to UAB in FIU's season-finale at Bartow Arena. With the loss, the Panthers stand at 3-26 overall and close out the 2015 Conference USA campaign with an 0-18 record, while the win brings the Blazers to 17-12 on the season and 11-7 in league play.
Four players registered double-figures for the Panthers led by senior
Marita Davydova's 18. Junior
Taylor Shade chipped in with 15, while redshirt freshman
Kiandre'a Pound had 12. Junior
Destini Feagin rounded out the bunch with 11. Feagin was one rebound shy of finishing the game with a double-double as she pulled down nine boards on the day. UAB was led by senior Janae Smith who finished with a career-high 36 points.
FIU hit 32.8 percent (19-of-58) of its shots, while UAB was 46.9 percent (30-of-64) from the floor. Smith hit over half of the Blazers' 30 shots as she converted on 16-of-24 of her attempts (66.7 percent). The teams were identical on the boards, but UAB proved deadly inside as it produced 32 points in the paint compared to only 20 from FIU. The Blazers also received some relief off their bench with 15 points.
The two teams got off to a sleepy start as only 23 combined points were scored in the first 10 minutes of play. After exchanging a couple of baskets for the majority of the half, UAB started blazing and went on an 18-8 run and took a 28-19 lead at the 2:49 point in the first. FIU pulled back within six after a couple of Shade layups and a Davydova old fashioned three-point play to close the half with a score of 30-24.
After opening the second half scoring the first five points, the Panthers hit a dry spell going scoreless for over four minutes. Feagin finally ended the drought hitting one of her three three-point field goals with 14:09 left to play. During that time, the Blazers embarked on a 10-0 run to take a double-digit lead. UAB continued to dominate in the second as they pulled ahead by as many as 20 before taking the game 72-56.
