MIAMI (Sept. 11, 2015) – Junior
Ellen Crist buried two goals in four minutes, as the FIU women's soccer team (3-3-0) downed the North Florida Osprey, 2-0, on Friday night.
The Panthers held the possession battle throughout the match, outshooting the Osprey, 15-4. FIU only allowed four shots during the match, with just two coming on goal.
Freshman
Steffi Reischmann tallied the Panthers' first chance of the night in the 15
th minute. Off an FIU set piece, the freshman collected the ball off a rebound and blasted a shot that the Osprey' keeper stopped. Senior
Madlen Weinhardt ignited FIU's next chance in the 26
th minute when she juked the North Florida defender and connected with junior
Pat Tomanon. Tomanon one-touched the ball to Reischmann, who just missed a goal with a sliding tackle.
The Panthers remained in control of the game's tempo through the 30
th minute when sophomore
Paula Quintero sent a shot towards next that nearly squeaked by the diving Osprey' keeper. Both teams entered the half still searing for the game's first goal, although kept its hold on possession and rattled off seven shots, while limiting North Florida to just one.
Five minutes into the second stanza, freshman
Lyrik Fryer used a powerful shot from the top of the box to test North Florida's keeper, who had to climb the ladder to poke the ball out of play.
Fryer began FIU's 11
th opportunity of the match when she crossed the ball across the box and connected with junior
Alyssa Robinson's head, but Victoria Ekeil came up with the stop towards the lower post.
Crist's first collegiate score came in the 81
st minute and proved to be the difference maker. Weinhardt fielded a pass into the box and crossed it to Crist, who went top shelf for the score. The junior padded the Panthers' lead four minutes later in the 85
th minute when she capitalized off a loose ball in the box that redshirt senior
Scarlet Montoya tapped to Crist for the insurance goal.
FIU is next in action on Sunday at Florida Gulf Coast. First touch is slated for 1 p.m.
