Box Score MIAMI (Sept. 27, 2015) – FIU Women's Soccer team (6-5-0) team won its second match of the weekend, 3-2, against the UTEP Miners (8-4-1), Sunday afternoon at the FIU Soccer Stadium in Miami, Fla.
Sunday's match had a quiet start until the Miners cut the silence with a goal in the 32
nd minute. UTEP's Kennadie Chaudhary had a solo breakaway up middle of the field to set her up for the first goal of the game. At the end of the first half the Miners led 1-0.
FIU didn't hesitate in the second half to tie the score, 1-1 at the 47
th minute. After a foul by the Miners in the box, FIU sets up for a penalty kick by senior
Madlen Weinhardt, whose attempt was saved by goalkeeper Alyssa Palacios. Senior
Scarlet Montoya corralled the deflection and connected with Weinhardt for the goal. The score was the fourth of the season for Weinhardt.
Sophomore
Paula Quintero registered her first goal of the season in the 59
th minute. Quintero, unassisted, brilliantly handled the ball right past the keeper for the empty-net goal. The goal gave the Panthers their first lead of the game, 2-1.
In the 89
th minute, UTEP's Aleah Davis sent a header off a corner kick to tie up the game 2-2.
The Panthers were fouled in the 90
th minute, setting up a free kick just outside the area. The free kick taken by Montoya proved to be the game winner with just 30 seconds left in the match. Montoya's shot cleared the wall and found the left corner of the net to give FIU the 3-2 win.
"I was telling myself that you don't get second chances like this very often so take advantage of it now and just put it in the net," Montoya said. "Do you want to continue playing or do you want to just show them that the game ends here, and that's exactly what I ended up doing."
"We limited a team, UTEP, that is on a 5-game winning streak coming into the game," Head Coach
Thomas Chestnutt said. "I think the team did a great job and I think the energy and mind-set we came out with in the second half was the difference in the game. Great team win today, capped off with a moment of brilliance: that goal (Montoya's goal) could be a top ten goal of the year."
The Panthers return to action on Friday, Oct. 2, when they travel to Houston, Texas, to take on Rice at 8 p.m. FIU's next home match will be Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. against Southern Miss at the FIU Soccer Stadium.
