MIAMI (October 14, 2016) – The FIU men's soccer team heads back out on the road looking to get back on the winning track when the Panthers travel to Huntington, West Virginia to face Marshall on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. The match will be just one of two that FIU will play on the road in its final five outings of the regular season.
The Panthers (3-6-2, 1-2-1 Conference USA) snapped a four-match losing streak on Monday night with a hard-fought 0-0 double overtime draw against South Carolina at the FIU Soccer Stadium. Each team had 11 shots on the night, despite the Gamecocks holding a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal.
FIU senior goalkeeper
Arthur Clapot finished the outing with five saves as he recorded his third shutout of the season and the seventh of his career.
On the year,
Santiago Patino leads the team in points scored with 14 (7g) and has recorded three multi-goal matches and four multi-point contests. Only four other Panthers have netted goals this season –
Brad Fountain,
Jamar Campion-Hinds,
Joris Ahlinvi,
Luis Betancur and
Paul Marie – with the quintet scoring one goal apiece.
Marshall comes into Saturday's match with a 6-7 overall record and a 1-2 mark in Conference USA. The Thundering Herd has dropped three of its last four, including a tough 1-0 loss to Wake Forest on Oct. 11 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The Panthers and the Demon Deacons met on Sept. 20 with Wake Forest coming out on top 2-0.
Marshall has two players who each have eight points on the year in Daniel Jodah and Trevor Starcher, both with three goals and two assists. Paul Whitener is not far behind with six points (1g, 4a) and Myles Newhouse has four points (2g) this season.
Following its match at Marshall, FIU returns home to close out the regular season with three-of-four on its home turf beginning with rival FAU on Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. The match against the Owls is the first of two-straight at the FIU Soccer Stadium. The Panthers will close out the stretch when they welcome UCF to Miami for their final non-conference tilt of the season on Oct. 25 at 7 p.m.
