MIAMI (October 15, 2016) -- After the second tie result in its last four games, the FIU women's soccer program finishes the home weekend with a Sunday tilt against visiting WKU Sunday at 1 p.m.
Â
Following the 1-1 tie at home Friday against Marshall, the Panthers sport a 2-8-3 overall record, 1-3-2 in Conference USA. The Panthers climbed one spot in the league standings after the tie. Three teams are tied with one more point above FIU in the standings, making Sunday's contest important for seeding.
Â
WKU lost on Friday at Florida Atlantic by a 1-0 result. The Lady Toppers slipped into a tie for second in the league standings with a 5-2 record. WKU is 10-5 on the season, and the only team in the top six in the standings coming off a loss.
Â
FIU lost 1-0 last season in Bowling Green, but beat the Lady Toppers in the three meetings before that. The all-time series has WKU ahead 7-5-1, dating back to the 2001 season.
Â
FIU got the first career goal from defender
Jacky Manteas (Schloss Holte-Stukenbrokck, Germany), who headed in a corner kick from freshman
Isabella de Almagro (Pembroke Pines, Florida / American Heritage HS) in the 49
th minute to take a 1-0 lead over Marshall. The assist was the first one for de Almagro, who is third on the team with three points this season, one behind Manteas, who is second with four. The Panthers are led in scoring by senior
Alyssa Robinson (Pembroke Pines, Florida / American Heritage), who has four goals and eight points.
Â
WKU has two of its five losses in the previous four contests, but shutouts against Middle Tennessee and UAB in between the losses. Chandler Backes is Conference USA's only 10-goal scorer this season so far, and with one assist, has posted 21 points. Goalkeeper Allison Leone leads the league with a 0.639 goals-against average and is third in conference with seven shutouts.
Â
The Panthers will just have one lone game next weekend, the final road game of the regular season, Sunday at UTSA at 2 p.m. Eastern.
