FORT MYERS, FLORIDA (November 15, 2016) -- FIU hit the road for its first game away from Miami, but a barrage of three-point field goals from host FGCU was too much for the Panthers to overcome in a 89-42 loss Tuesday night at Alico Arena in non-conference women's basketball action. The loss drops FIU to 0-2 on the season. FGCU is 2-1.
Â
The Eagles came into the game shooting 24.1 percent from three-point range, and took 39 three-pointers on the night. FGCU hit a season-high 14 three's generating 42 points and a 35.9 percentage with the kind rims at home.
Â
FIU hit the first two buckets of the game, sandwiched around a pair of FGCU free throws. A two-point basket from
Janka Hegedus (Budapest, Hungary) and a three from fellow senior
Nikolina Todorovic (Bosnia and Herzegovina) gave the Panthers an early 5-2 lead. But a three and a layup from FGCU gave the Eagles a 7-5 lead. Two free throws from sophomore
Kristian Hudson (Birmingham, Alabama) was followed by a 9-0 run to end the period and an 18-7 lead for FGCU.
Â
FIU hit a pair of threes in the opening minutes of the second, but a 6-0 run over a nearly six-minute stretch in the middle of the period helped the Eagles extend the lead to 18 with less than two minutes to go in the half. FGCU scored the last four points of the second to take a 23-point lead into the locker room at intermission.
Â
Both teams had their best scoring output in the third. FIU posted 15 points, while the Eagles produced 27. The largest lead of the period was 36 before the Panthers went on a 7-2 run at the end of the quarter.
Â
The Panthers were led in scoring by freshman
Alexis Gordon (Palm Bay, Florida / Covenant Christian), who scored 10 points for FIU. Three Panthers collected six rebounds each to pace the team.
Â
FIU will return home in one week, when the Panthers host Georgetown for the first time on Lime Court at FIU Arena. Tip time is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Miami.
