Coming off a 16-hit game against Missouri, FIU kept cranking out the hits against Seton Hall in the opener of a four-game series Friday evening at the FIU ballpark. The Panthers collected 14 hits en route to an 8-3 victory over the Pirates (2-3).
Every FIU batter in the starting lineup had at least one hit and five of them collected two hits as the Panthers added to a 2-0 lead with a six-run fifth inning to salt the game.
FIU (2-4) had five singles and a double in the six-run fifth.
Kenny Meimerstorf's RBI single made it 3-0. After a double play allowed the fourth FIU run to score.
Kolby Follis had an RBI single to left to increase the lead to 5-0.
Jack Schaaf also had an RBI single in the inning and
Zack Soria followed with an RBI double.
Irving Lopez, Schaaf, Soria,
Austin Rodriguez and Follis each had two hits on the night. Follis (6 for 11) is off to a scorching start leading the team in hitting at .545. Rodriguez (8 for 17) is second at .471.
On the mound,
Andres Nunez (1-1) pitched eight strong innings. The sophomore right-hander allowed eight hits, two earned runs, one walk and struck out six batters. Seton Hall right-hander Shane McCarthy (0-2) took the loss giving up 11 hits and five runs in four innings.
The series resumes Saturday evening with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch. FIU right-hander
