BIRMINGHAM (March 9, 2016) -- FIU women's basketball could not stop the onslaught of offense from sixth-seeded Marshall and conceded a 76-44 result in round two of the Conference USA Championships at Bartow Arena on Wednesday night. FIU's season ends at 5-26, and the all-time C-USA Tournament record slips to 4-2.
Â
Marshall advances to take on the third-seeded WKU program in the late game Thursday night. Marshall set a program record with 12 three-point baskets made in the contest.
Â
"I just want to thank the girls for believing in us as a staff, and for being there for each other over these last four games," said Interim Head Coach
Tiara Malcom. "We asked them to be together and that's the way we finished."
Â
The Herd came out hot in the opening period and kept it from being a contest early. Marshall shot 10-for-19 (.526) in the opening period and held FIU down to just .308 on 4-for-13 shooting. FIU had trouble from long distance, hitting just one of five attempts from behind the arc in the opening quarter.
Â
FIU scored just nine points in the second quarter, which played much like the first, with FIU shooting just .308 in the first half. The bright spot for FIU was junior forward
Janka Hegedus (Budapest, Hungary), who had 11 first-half points.
Â
FIU outscored the Herd 14-12 in the third quarter, but the result was already determined. The Panthers were 6-for-18 in the period, hitting a pair of three-point baskets in the period, more than in the first half.
Â
Junior
Nikolina Todorovic (Bosnia and Herzegovina) finished with 10 points.
Â
"What I love about this team is that we never quit," said Todorovic after the game.
Â
The game was the last for senior
Taylor Shade (Boynton Beach, Florida / Community HS), who scored eight points. She finishes 18
th on the all-time FIU scoring list with 1,069 points.
