FIU got a vintage performance from
Chris Mourelle in the first game of a doubleheader with Manhattan that took just over two hours to complete. Mourelle worked quickly and efficiently to lead the Panthers over the Jaspers, 5-2 Saturday at the FIU ballpark.
Manhattan (3-8) responded in the nightcap with a two-run ninth inning rally and pushed across the winning run in the 10
th inning for a 7-6 win to split the doubleheader with FIU (8-10).
Mourelle (2-2) pitched seven shutout innings in the first game to record the win. The junior right-hander allowed six hits, walked just one batter and struck out four in a game that lasted just two hours and 24 minutes.
Williams Durruthy recorded his first save of the season.
Austin Rodriguez gave Mourelle all the support he would need with a two-run single in the third inning.
FIU added a run in the sixth after
Nick Day tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Eddie Silva. In the eighth,
Jack Schaaf's RBI triple and
Zach Files's RBI single capped off the Panthers scoring.
Schaaf was 3 for 4 in the first game.
Kolby Follis and Day each had two hits.
In the second game, FIU got a two-run double from
Kenny Meimerstorf in the bottom of the fifth to snap a 4-4 tie.
The Panthers were cruising along until the ninth thanks to solid relief pitching from
Dominic LoBrutto after the sophomore took over from starter
Garrett Cave with no outs in the sixth inning.
LoBrutto worked 3 1/3 innings until the Jaspers quickly struck in the ninth. Jose Carrera walked, Christian Santisteban singled and Fabian Pena delivered a two-run double down the right field line to tie the score.
In the 10
th after an FIU error allowed Anthony Rocchietti, who singled, to move into scoring position, Carrera's RBI single off
Michael Agis (0-1) to provide the decisive run.
In the nightcap Silva was 3 for 5 with two RBI. Meimerstorf and Day each had two hits.
The teams wrap up the four-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. FIU sends right-hander
