Story Links

CHARLOTTE — Brett Netzer singled home Derek Gallello in the bottom of the 10th inning as Charlotte walked-off with a 4-3 win against FIU in the opener of a three-game series Friday night at Hayes Stadium in Charlotte.

Gallello was walked by Williams Durruthy (0-2) to start the 10th. Logan Sherer then singled and both runners moved up 90 feet after a wild pitch to set the stage for Netzer's game-winning hit to left field.

The Panthers are now 10-12 overall and 0-1 in Conference USA play. The 49ers improved to 10-8 and 1-0 in C-USA.

Down 2-1, FIU tied the score in the seventh inning. Zach Files led off the inning with a single and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Eddie Silva. Kenny Meimerstorf singled to left before Jack Schaaf hit a ground ball that 49ers second baseman Netzer booted to allow Files to score the tying run.

The Panthers took the lead in the top of the eighth inning. With one out, Austin Rodriguez walked and Nick Day singled. Files followed with a single to right that scored Rodriguez to make it 3-2.

Files was 2 for 5. Meimerstorf and Irving Lopez were each 2 for 4.

Charlotte tied the score in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI double by Sherer off Cody Crouse, who relieved FIU starter Andres Nunez

Nunez went seven innings, allowed just three hits and two runs. Sean Geoghegan started for Charlotte and also went seven innings, allowed six hits and two runs.

Holden Capps (2-0) pitched 1/3 of an inning in the top of the 10th to earn the win.

The teams resume the series Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. The game can be heard on the FIU Sports Radio Network.
