MIAMI (March 27, 2016) – In the final home match of the 2016 season, the FIU women's tennis team (14-2) defeated the Brown Bears (11-6), 5-2, on Sunday, March 27, from the FIU Tennis Courts.
Prior to the match, seniors
Kaitlin Brozovich and
Carlotta Orlando were honored as Sunday marked the final home match for the two Panthers.
With the win, the No. 49-ranked Panthers finished the season with a 7-2 mark at home. It also gives FIU its 14
th victory of the season with two regular season matches left. With a mark of 14-2 on the year, the Panthers have produced the most wins by an FIU team since going 14-8 during the 2010 campaign.
Brown jumped out to a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles portion of the match. The duo of Brozovich and sophomore
Nerma Caluk fell to Maddie Stearns and Ammu Mandalap, 6-2, while the tandem of Orlando and redshirt freshman
Andrea Lazaro dropped a 6-4 decision to Hannah Camhi and Katie Ta.
FIU responded with four-consecutive singles wins to claim the team's third-straight home victory. Lazaro tied the match at 1-1 with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Camhi. The win marked the 15
th-straight for Lazaro, who remains undefeated in dual matches this season (14-0). Junior
Nina Nagode registered her 20
th win of the season with a 6-0, 6-3 win over No. 94 Alyza Benotto to give FIU a 2-1 lead. Caluk extended the Panther lead to 3-1, topping Ta, 6-2, 6-1. The win improved Caluk to 25-5 overall on the season and 13-2 in dual action.
Freshman
Maryna Veksler clinched the match for FIU, defeating Dayna Lord, 6-4, 6-2. With the win, Veksler moved her singles record to 25-7 (10-3 dual) on the year.
The Bears cut into the Panther lead as Brozovich fell to Mariska Chamdani, 7-6 (4), 6-0. Orlando closed out the match with a 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (3) win over Stearns for a final score of 5-2.
FIU will hit the road to take on UCF on Friday, April 1, in Orlando, Fla. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
