Story Links

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Using three consecutive hits and a hit batter with the bases loaded, FIU rallied late against UAB for a 5-4 win in the opener of a crucial three-game series at Young Memorial Field on Friday night in Birmingham, Ala.

The Panthers (23-27, 10-15 Conference USA) tied the Blazers (19-30, 10-15 C-USA), WKU and Charlotte for seventh place in the conference standings. All four teams currently have a 10-15 conference record and are vying for the final two berths in the C-USA tournament.

Down 4-3 in the top of the eighth inning, FIU got three consecutive hits off Garrett Whitlock (3-5) to open the frame. Nick Day singled, Irving Lopez doubled and Austin Rodriguez dribbled an infield hit by the third base line to score Day with the tying run.

Later in the top of the eighth inning Kenny Meimerstorf walked to load the bases with two outs. Whitlock then got ahead of Eddie Silva 0-2 and was a strike away from getting out of the inning but the right-hander clipped Silva's jersey with an inside fastball to force in Lopez with the go-ahead and eventual winning run.

The trio of Day, Lopez and Rodriguez each had three hits to account for nine of FIU's 12 hits on Friday. Lopez had two doubles and a two-run triple. Rodriguez had a double.

FIU left-hander Dominic LoBrutto (3-2) kept the UAB bats at bay with 1 1/3 scoreless relief innings. Williams Durruthy recorded his ninth save to close the game.

Cody Crouse started for the Panthers and went 6 1/3 innings, allowed eight hits, four runs, one earned run, one walk and struck out four.

The middle of the game of the series is Saturday at 3 p.m. The game can be heard on the FIU Sports Radio Network.
