SWEEP HOME ALABAMA: FIU Brings Out the Brooms at UAB with 11-4 Win

Story Links

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — For the second consecutive game FIU scored 11 runs as the Panthers defeated UAB, 11-4, to sweep the three-game series at Young Memorial Field in Birmingham.

FIU (25-27, 12-15 Conference USA) moved into seventh place alone in the Conference USA standings after Sunday because Charlotte's game at UTSA was cancelled due to inclement weather. The 49ers (11-15) trail the Panthers by half a game. UAB (19-32, 10-17 C-USA) is tied with Western Kentucky for ninth place.

FIU's magic number to clinch a berth in the C-USA tournament is one — either an FIU win or one loss by UAB and WKU sends the Panthers to Hattiesburg, Miss. The top eight teams make the conference tournament beginning May 25.

Like it did in the first two games of the series, FIU scored in the first inning Sunday. The Panthers plated three runs thanks to help from UAB starter Stephen Baggett (0-3). The Blazers left-hander committed a throwing error, walked a batter and hit a batter. FIU led 3-0 until the sixth inning.

The Panthers added two runs in the sixth and batted around in the seventh scoring four more runs.

Eddie Silva, Zack Soria, Irving Lopez and Kenny Meimerstorf each had two hits. Jack Schaaf was 1 for 4 with three RBI.

FIU pitching continued its mastery of the UAB bats through seven more scoreless innings to start Sunday's game. Starter Andres Nunez (4-3) pitched five shutout innings, allowed just two hits and struck out four.

From the eighth inning of Friday's game through the first out of the eighth inning Sunday, the Panthers tossed 18 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings against UAB.

FIU concludes the regular season back home against Southern Miss. The three-game series starts Thursday, May 19 with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch. The game can be seen on PantherVision and heard on the FIU Sports Radio Network.
