Story Links

Nick Day hit two of a season-high four home runs for FIU to fuel the Panthers' sweep of No. 13 Southern Miss in a 13-8 win Saturday afternoon at the FIU ballpark.

Day hit a pair of two-run home runs. Eddie Silva belted a three-run home run and Kenny Meimerstorf connected on a two-run shot to provide the brunt of the FIU offense.

The Panthers (28-27, 15-15 Conference USA) now head to the Conference USA tournament where they begin play Wednesday in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Southern Miss (36-18, 20-10 C-USA) will host the conference championship from Pete Taylor Park.

FIU fell behind 4-0 in the top of the first inning but rallied with a six-run fourth inning and padded its lead with a four-run fifth inning.

Down 5-1 in the bottom of the third inning, Day hit his first two-run homer of the game to bring the Panthers within two runs.

In the fourth, Nick Mira, who was 3 for 4, had an RBI single to cut the USM lead to 5-4. Silva then followed with the decisive blow – a three-run home run off USM starter Walker Powell (4-3) that clanked off the left field foul pole to put FIU ahead 7-5.

The Panthers sent 10 men to the plate in the fourth inning, including Day, who hit his second two-run home run that made the score 9-5. Day's two home runs gave him a team-leading 10 home runs on the season. Day went 2 for 4 with four RBI. One inning later Meimerstorf hit a two-run home run to left.

Michael Agis (1-1) recorded his first win in an FIU uniform by pitching 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Andres Nunez.

All of FIU's Conference USA tournament games can be heard on the FIU Sports Radio Network.
