Box Score 2 MOBILE, Ala. (September 2, 2016) – The FIU volleyball team (1-4) had a winless Day One of the Jaguar Invitational on their first trip to Jag Gym in four years. They began the day with a hard fought, 3-1 loss to Florida A&M (25-20, 8-25, 25-23, 25-22). The Panthers later fell to the host school, University of South Alabama, 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-19).
Against Florida A&M (1-3), the Panthers were led by senior
Katie Hogan, who posted 17 kills on the match and a .593 hitting percentage. She also led in points with 21.0, her highest output of the season. Defensively, freshman
Helene Thelle made her collegiate debut at libero, leading the way with 13 digs in the match. Freshman
Sophia Sires got her first collegiate start and led in assists with 18.
FIU's struggles continued in hitting efficiency, hitting .217 for the match. In the second set, the Panthers hit .500, giving them a dominant, 25-8 victory. In the other three sets, however, FIU only hit a combined .143. The team led in digs, blocks and service aces, but still came up short in the end.
Against South Alabama (4-1), Hogan's performance rolled over to the first set, where she carried the team, but FIU lost, 25-20. Hogan finally cooled down in the second set, from which the Panthers could not recover. On the day, Hogan finished with 25 kills and 30.0 points.
The Panthers will be back in action tomorrow morning, September 3, to face Southeastern Louisiana. First serve is scheduled at 11:30 a.m. (ET) in Jag Gym in Mobile, Alabama.
