MIAMI (Sept. 23, 2016) -- FIU suffered another long weather delay in a game, and succumbed to a powerful young Charlotte team in a 4-0 home loss in Conference USA women's soccer action Friday night at the FIU Soccer Field. The loss drops the Panthers to 1-7-1 on the season and an 0-2 start in C-USA play. The 49ers improve to 6-4 overall, 2-0 in league games.
Â
The Panthers played the 49ers level for nearly 40 minutes, with the 49ers getting a first-half goal in the 40
th minute on a cross and 12-yard blast to the top of the frame. That was the first of four goals all scored by freshmen in the contest. That 1-0 score held to the half, which lasted 94 minutes because of lightning in the area.
Â
Following the delay, the 49ers posted three more goals in the second frame, including a corner kick goal from Riley Orr, which bent into and deflected in off the far post from the kick.
Â
FIU senior keeper
Sophia Trujillo (Miami, Florida / Gulliver Prep) recorded five saves in the contest.
Â
The Panthers posted a season-high 14 shots, with Charlotte keeper Anna Shelden posting a pair of saves.
Â
FIU will play its next three contests on the road, starting with a game at UAB next Friday at 8 p.m. Eastern to close out the month.
