MIAMI (September 4, 2016) -- FIU women's soccer battled the noon Miami heat of September and their opponent, the Miami (Ohio) Redhawks and fell to a late goal on a header for a 1-0 result at the FIU Soccer Stadium. The Panthers are now 0-4-1, while the Redhawks are 2-3 on the season.
Â
The Panthers have dropped two-straight 1-0 losses, with both goals coming in the last 11 minutes of the game. Four of the five FIU contests have been within a single score.
Â
"We simply have to continue to have that hunger at the end of games," said senior
Talia McMurtrie. "We just need to want it more than the opponent in those final minutes. That's essentially the difference in these close results."
Â
The Redhawks' goal came in the 85
th minute, when freshman Sam Worthman lifted a pass from the end line across the front of the net to find the head of junior Shae van Gassen, who went far post for the game's only scoring play.
Â
Both teams had chances, and both keepers had to make tough saves in the contest, including 13 combined in the first half. For the game, Miami outshot the Panthers 15-12.
Â
FIU senior keeper
Sophia Trujillo (Miami, Florida / Gulliver Prep) posted eight saves, her second-highest total of the season. She is 0-4-1 on the season. Miami senior keeper Vic Maniaci got her first win of the year (1-2) while making six saves in the game.
Â
The Panthers will hit the road for a pair of in-state games this week to finish the non-conference portion of the schedule. FIU plays Thursday at UCF at 7 p.m. before a Sunday, 1 p.m. contest at Miami (Florida) down in Coral Gables.
