The Basics
- The FIU men's soccer team continued its three-match road stretch on Saturday heading to the Palmetto State for a key Conference USA match with the South Carolina Gamecocks. The Panthers, who were coming off a thrilling double-overtime come-from-behind win on Tuesday at Florida Gulf Coast, didn't miss a beat, defeating South Carolina 5-2 at Eugene E. Stone III Stadium. The win improves FIU's record to 8-0-3 overall and 4-0-1 in C-USA. The Gamecocks drop to 4-8-1 and 0-4-1 slate in league play. The win also extends the Panthers's unbeaten streak to 11 games. FIU is currently one of just three schools in Division I without a blemish on the season.
Â
- After a 0-0 tie at the break, and after South Carolina scored the first goal of the match in the 51st-minute of play, FIU scored all five of its goals in the second half with
Paul Marie (Saint Aubindes Bois, France/5th Ursule) starting the onslaught with an unassisted goal in the 60th-minute.
Â
- Marie also had a hand in the second and third goals of the match. In the 64th-minute, Marie served up
Jordan Machado (Juvignac, France) in the 64th-minute for his second goal of the season. Marie then beat South Carolina goalkeeper William Pyle in the 72nd-minute. Â
Â
- After
Matias Barraza (Miami, Fla./Doral Academy) netted his second goal of the season for the Panthers in the 82nd-minute, South Carolina's Tucker Monheimer tried to spark the Gamecocks beating FIU's
Hugo Fauroux (Cannes, France/Lycee Bristol) in the 86th-minute of play.
Â
-
Donald Tomlinson ended any thoughts of a South Carolina comeback scoring the final goal of the match, one minute and 22 seconds later, for his first goal of the season in the 87th-minute.
Â
- FIU outshot the Gamecocks 24-16 and held a 11-7 shots-on-goal advantage.
Â
- Fauroux finished the night with four saves in the win. He improves to 7-0-3 on the year.
Â
Stat of the Game
- After a scoreless first half, all seven goals by both teams were scored in the second half.
Â
Quotable
"It was a good road win tonight, another step in the right direction in conference against a tough opponent. We struggled in the first half, but were much better in the second half. It was good to see a positive response after the half with good goals by the team. Now we prepare for USF." – FIU Head Coach
Kevin Nylen
