Tampa, Fla. | Corbett Soccer Stadium
Â
The Basics
- The FIU men's soccer team took its show on the road for its final non-conference match of the season on Tuesday night as the Panthers traveled up Interstate 75 to Tampa to face in-state foe USF at Corbett Stadium. FIU, which moved up in the United Soccer Coaches poll earlier in the afternoon from No. 14 to No. 11, pulled out a hard-fought 2-1 win to remain unbeaten. The Panthers improve to 9-0-3 overall.
Â
- After tonight, FIU is now just one of two unbeaten teams in collegiate soccer, joining only No. 1 Indiana (12-0-2). No. 3 Maryland, which came into its game with Georgetown with a 10-0-3 record, dropped a 1-0 decision at home.
Â
-
Joris Ahlinvi (Gujan-Mestras, France) got the Panthers on the board first in the 22nd minute off an assist from
Santiago Patino (Orlando, Florida/Freedom) and
Esteban Calvo (Escazu, San Jose, Costa Rica/Montverde Academy) to beat USF goalkeeper Harrison Devenish-Mears.
Â
- In the 63rd minute,
Alessandro Campoy (Miami, Fla./Imaculate-LaSalle) tallied what turned out to be the game-winner taking a pass from
Matias Barraza (Miami, Fla./Doral Academy) and Calvo and buried a shot in the back of the goal for a 2-0 lead.
Â
- USF made things interesting in the 75th minute when Bradley Farias was fouled in the box and was awarded a penalty kick. Farias fired a shot and beat FIU goalkeeper
Hugo Fauroux (Cannes, France/Lycee Bristol) to cut the Panthers' lead to one, 2-1. That was the last opportunity that the Bulls were able to get the rest of the way.
Â
- FIU and USF finished the match with 12 shots apiece, however the Panthers had a 6-4 shots on goal advantage in the win.
Â
Stat of the Game
FIU keeper
Hugo Fauroux finished the match with three saves, with all three coming in the second half and proving to be big stops to keep the Panthers in the lead.
Â
Quotable
