The Basics
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â In the 2017 season finale, FIU fell in three sets (26-24, 25-13, 25-19) at Southern Miss Saturday afternoon at Reed Green Coliseum. FIU gets a split in the final weekend to finish at 6-16 overall, 4-10 in Conference USA play. USM is 19-11 overall and 9-5 on the year. The Panthers rallied to end the season, winning four of their last seven matches.
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â The first set featured 10 ties, but only one lead change. FIU got up by as many as three, at 7-4, but the Golden Eagles caught and passed FIU at 8-7 and never again lost the lead in the set, despite ties at 14, 15, 16 and again at 24-all.
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â The Panthers were able to sideout the Golden Eagles at a 60 percent rate in the first set, but won less than half the points (22-for-50) when USM was serving. Â
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â For just the fourth time this season, the Panthers did not have a double-digits digs performer. Three Panthers led the team with seven. Â
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Senior Taija Thomas (Scarborough, Ontario, Canada) paced FIU with nine kills.
-       Freshman setter Aleksandra Grigoreva (Moscow, Russia) put together a 21-assist, seven-dig night. Â
Stat of the Match
After a tight opening set, the Golden Eagles won the point on 11 of the 13 FIU serves in the second (84 percent) to only allow 13 FIU points in the middle frame.
