FGCU 88, FIU 52
Records: FIU 0-3. FGCU 2-0.
Wednesday, November 15 | 7 p.m. | Miami | Ocean Bank Convocation Center
The Basics
- Looking for its first win of the season, FIU took a three-point lead to the half, but visiting FGCU had too much firepower in the second half to grab an 88-52 win in Miami at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center Wednesday night in women's college basketball.
- FIU got down 10 early, but stormed back in the second quarter, outscoring the Eagles 20-12, thanks to a .529 shooting quarter, for a 33-30 edge at intermission. FIU outshot the Eagles .424 to .313 in the opening half.
- FIU junior Kristian Hudson (Birmingham, Alabama) put up eight points in the opening half on 3-for-7 shooting, which included a 2-for-4 mark from three-point range. At that point of the season, Hudson was shooting 10-for-14 from long distance, a .714 mark.
- The Eagles caught fire in the third quarter, shooting .625 from the floor, and knocking down five-of-eight three-point tries for a 33-15 edge in the period. The Eagles led 63-48 after three periods.
- FIU scored only one point in the fourth period, until, with 17 seconds remaining in regulation, redshirt junior Kiandre'a Pound (Gifford, Florida / Sebastian River HS) hit a layup in the paint, got fouled and hit the free throw for the three-point play. It was the only field goal in the quarter for the Panthers.
- Pound and Hudson both led the Panthers with 15 points each. Pound led FIU with seven rebounds.
Stat of the Match
FIU nearly halved their turnovers from Monday's home loss. FGCU hit 17 three-point field goals on 42 attempts (.405).
From the Sideline
"I thought we played better than we did on Monday, especially in the first half," said FIU Head Coach Tiara Malcom. "We did not come out and play with energy in the second half and some of the shots they (FGCU) were missing started to fall. We have to learn to be more consistent and be who we are more."
Next Up
FIU plays the third of five-straight contests at home on Sunday afternoon, with a 2 p.m. tip scheduled against Air Force.
