The Basics
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â In a first-ever meeting between programs, Alabama A&M took down FIU 58-51 to open the 2017 FIU Women's Basketball Thanksgiving Tournament in Miami.
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Both teams played aggressive defense and stymied the other's offense in the contest, as neither team could muster a shooting percentage over .350 in the contest.
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Despite trailing for more than 32 minutes in the game, AAMU closed on an 8-0 run in the final 1:58 to steal the road victory.
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â The third started with AAMU putting together an 8-1 run to get its first lead of the game with 5:18 in the period, but FIU answered with an 8-2 run to regain the lead. FIU led by as many as seven in the game, but allowed a game-high 20 points in the fourth quarter to the Lady Bulldogs.
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Redshirt junior Kiandre'a Pound (Gifford, Florida / Sebastian River HS) produced her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds. The 12 boards are a season-high for any Panther in 2017.
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Freshman Callie Cavanaugh (Holyoke, Massachusetts) led the Panthers with 11 points. She added seven rebounds.
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â FIU was limited to .291 shooting on the afternoon. The Lady Bulldogs shot .438 in the second half and finished at .338 for the game.
Stat of the Match                             Â
The Panthers finished 1-for-15 from three-point range. The .300 fourth-quarter was their best of the game.Â
From the Sideline
"This loss was particularly disappointing," said FIU Head Coach Tiara Malcom. "We allowed them to do everything that we said we wanted to stop. We settled for outside shots when they weren't rolling. At halftime, I wanted the ball to move more and we came right out and did the opposite."
Next Up                                                           Â
FIU finishes the two-day tournament with a game versus either Hartford or Charleston Southern at approximately 2 p.m.
