MIAMI (February 10, 2017) -- Freshman pitcher
Shannon Saile (Land O'Lakes, Florida / Land O' Lakes HS) amassed 10 strikeouts in her collegiate debut, but Memphis spoiled the outing by producing two runs in the final inning for a 3-2 win to conclude day one of the Felsberg Invitational in Miami.
Â
The game was defensive battle and pitcher's duel through three innings. Memphis pitcher Molly Smith did not give up a hit until the fourth and Saile had only one blemish in the hits column the first trip through the order.
Â
The Panthers grabbed the lead with two runs in the fourth on their first two hits and a costly Memphis error, which led to two unearned runs. Panther freshman
Jocelin Soto (Oxnard, California / Rio Mesa HS) produced the first RBI on an infield single and
Jessica Rivera (Miami, Florida / Gulliver Prep) drove in the other, her third of the day after a two-run homer in the first FIU game.
Â
Memphis closed the gap to one run in the fifth on a one-out double from Tyler Johnson.
Â
In the seventh, Memphis collected four hits on Saile, with the go-ahead RBI coming with two outs in the frame, a single through the left side by Kyler Trosclair.
Â
The Panthers got a one-out double and the potential tying run in scoring position in sophomore
Jackie Schoff (Bradenton, Florida / Lakewood Ranch HS), but she was stranded there in the seventh.
Â
Saile gave up seven hits and stranded five Tigers. She walked two.
Â
Smith allowed five hits and one walk, with four strikeouts for her first win of the year (1-0).
Â
The Panthers will play Memphis and Georgetown tomorrow again, flipping the order. The Memphis game is at 4 p.m. and the Georgetown contest starts at 6:30 p.m.
