FIU Women’s Tennis Defeats Florida Gulf Coast, 7-0

MIAMI (Feb. 24, 2017) – The FIU women's tennis team (6-1) defeated the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles (4-3), 7-0, on Friday afternoon from the FIU Tennis Courts.
 
The win, FIU's fourth-straight, marked the second-consecutive contest and third of the season where the Panthers shut out the opposition.
 
Ranked No. 38 in the current Oracle/ITA Women's Tennis Rankings, FIU improved to 3-0 at home this season.
 
The Panthers jumped out to a 1-0 lead following doubles action as the duo of Andrea Lazaro and Nina Nagode defeated Julia Ascua and Julianna Curtis, 6-3, and the tandem of Ulyana Grib and Maryna Veksler downed Bridget Forster and Maja Ornberg, 6-1.
 
Lazaro gave FIU a 2-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Orngerg. The victory for the No. 34-ranked player was her 12th of the season and improved the native of Barcelona, Spain, to 23-1 in career dual matches. The Panthers added to their lead, 3-0, when Veksler defeated Ascua, 6-3, 6-2, and made the score 4-0 with the match-clinching point by Nerma Caluk (6-2, 6-4 win over Sofia Perez).
 
FIU scored three more points with wins by Grib (6-2, 4-6, 10-3 over Sara Kelly), Nagode (6-4, 7-5 win over Laura Falceto Font) and Mina Markovic (6-4, 6-7 [5], 10-8 win over Curtis).
 
The Panthers will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 25, hosting the Stetson Hatters. First serve from the FIU Tennis Courts is slated for 1:00 p.m.
