Panthers Split DH at FAU as Softball Win Streak Comes to an End

BOCA RATON, Fla. (April 1, 2017) -- Florida Atlantic got four runs on just two hits and finally put an end to the FIU softball win streak, which had reached a school-record 17 games, in a 4-1 Owls win in game two of a Saturday doubleheader at FAU Softball Stadium. After FIU won 5-1 in the opening game, the teams ended with a split of the twinbill, with a Conference USA series clincher scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Panthers, now 31-7 overall, 7-1 in Conference USA play, allowed three runs on just one hit in the second inning. FIU freshman starting pitcher Shannon Saile (Land O'Lakes, Florida / Land O'Lakes HS) walked the bases loaded in the inning with two outs. A high chopper on the infield turned into a base hit, but the aggressive Owls kept advancing, and FIU kept throwing to bases, only to have FAU slide in safely. At least four bases were thrown to, and the bases eventually cleared without an error and the batter ended up a second base in the bizarre sequence.

FIU clawed back with a run on two hits in the fourth when redshirt senior Dani Mowry (Cocoa, Florida / Space Coast HS) doubled off the fence to drive in senior Ashley Leon (Miami, Florida / Gulliver Prep), who had singled to lead off the inning and had stolen second.

A double, sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly in the sixth gave the Owls the three-run lead back and FAU pitching and defense held on for the win.

The loss went to Saile, who had her streak of innings without allowing an earned run end at 33.2. She is now 10-6 on the season. She only allowed two hits, but walked six and struck out three in her six innings of work.

The FAU winning pitcher was Tatum Buckley, who improved to 5-3. In her complete-game effort, she gave up five hits and no walks, striking out two.

The loss was the first in 29 games this year in which FIU had more hits than the opponent, and the first of seven games losing when the opponent had two hits or less.

Senior Stephanie Texeira (Miami, Florida / Gulliver Prep) led all players with two hits in the game and four hits for the doubleheader.
