Mowry Drives in Five as Saile Shuts Out Charlotte, 11-0

CHARLOTTE (April 22, 2017) -- Redshirt senior Dani Mowry (Cocoa, Florida / Space Coast HS) drove in a career-high five RBI and freshman Shannon Saile (Land O'Lakes, Florida / Land O'Lakes HS) tossed a two-hit shutout as FIU powered past Charlotte, 11-0, Saturday at the Phillips Softball Complex. The C-USA contest was the first game of a scheduled doubleheader between the programs.

FIU is now 37-11 overall, 11-5 in C-USA, winners of five in a row this season and five in a row against Charlotte. The 49ers are now 24-20 on the season, 6-10 in league games. The 11 runs are the most for the Panthers in a C-USA game this season, and the first run-rule win in league.

The Panthers scored in each of the first four innings, starting with a two-out, two-RBI double from Mowry in the first inning. FIU is now 20-1 this season when scoring in the first inning.

FIU plated five runs in the second. A two-RBI single from senior Ashley Leon (Miami, Florida / Gulliver Prep) and a second two-RBI hit from Mowry were the highlights of the second frame.

In the third, an RBI double from Jackie Schoff (Bradenton, Florida / Lakewood Ranch HS) started the scoring and a two-run homer from senior Stephanie Texeira (Miami, Florida / Gulliver Prep) pushed across two more runs and a 10-0 lead.

Mowry capped off the scoring with her fifth homer of the season on her third hit and her fifth RBI of the day. Her five home runs are a career-high total for a season.

Saile allowed just two hits, did not allow a walk for the second time in a start this season, and struck out three 49ers for her sixth shutout of the season. She took over the team lead with a 1.72 ERA and lowered the team ERA to 1.77 for the season, best in C-USA.

The doubleheader continues from the Queen City at 3 p.m.
