The Basics
-Â The FIU women's soccer team opened its 2017 campaign on Sunday night at the FIU Soccer Stadium, taking the pitch against cross-town rival Miami. The Panthers battled, however, dropped the 2-0 decision to the Hurricanes in front of a raucous crowd of 664. FIU drops to 0-1, while Miami is 2-0 on the year.

Bria Williams (Lewisville, Texas) gave the Panthers their best chance of the night – and the first real chance of the game for either team – in the ninth minute when she fired a shot from the point, and from 20 yards out, that was barely deflected by Miami goalkeeper, Phallon Tullis-Joyce and went off the crossbar. That was one of FIU's four first half shots.
 - After the teams went to the break scoreless, UM's Ronnie Johnson connected for the first goal of the night, in the 56
th minute off an assist from Kristina Fisher. Johnson took a cross from Fisher and went from far to near post on the left side from seven yards out, netting what was the eventual game-winner. It was Johnson's third goal of the year.
 - Fisher then got into the scoring column in the 88
th minute, and giving the Hurricanes some insurance, scoring from five yards out in the bottom left of the goal, unassisted. It was her first marker of 2017.
- Despite being outshot by Miami, 25-7, The Panthers were kept in the game by senior goalkeeper
Nevena Stojakovic (Nis, Serbia) who recorded seven saves, including numerous from point-blank range.Â
Stat of the Game
Although Miami held a 9-4 advantage in shots in the first half, the Hurricanes truly proved to be the aggressor in the second stanza, outshooting the Panthers 16-3 en route to their 25-shot total.

The Panthers will travel to New England to battle Dartmouth on Aug, 25 and then the Vermont on Aug. 27. FIU then returns to the Sunshine State and heads up Interstate 95 to take on North Florida on Sept. 1 and Jacksonville on Sept. 3. FIU returns home on Sept. 7 to face Stetson at 7 p.m.
