Â
The Basics
- The FIU men's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw with New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) on Friday night at the FIU Soccer Stadium in the Panthers' home-opener. The match, which was deadlocked at the end of 90 minutes, was suspended due to lightning and was not resumed.
Â
-
Marvin Hezel (Waldshut, Germany/SC Freiburg) got the Panthers on the board first just before the intermission on a spectacular set piece in the 44
th minute. Off a corner kick that found its way to
Deshawon Nembhard (Dallas, Texas/St. Mark's School of Texas), Nembhard headed the ball to Hezel who beat the Highlanders' keeper, Victor Pujades, for the 1-0 lead.
Â
- After an FIU foul in the box in the 55
th minute gave Mamadou Guirassy a penalty kick, the Highlanders' defender beat the Panthers' goalkeeper
Hugo Fauroux (Cannes, France) for the equalizer. Guirassy struck again 15 minutes later to give NJIT a one goal advantage, 2-1.
Â
-
Paul Marie (Saint Aubindes Bois, France) leveled the match at two-all in the 72
nd minute off a pass from
Santiago Patino (Orlando, Fla./Freedom) to salvage the draw before the lightning and rain found its way over the FIU Soccer Stadium.
Â
- For the second-straight match, Fauroux had a relatively uneventful evening making just one save, taking advantage of a stout defense in front of him.
Â
- FIU outshot NJIT, 15-6, on the night; 8-3 in the first half and 7-3 in the second stanza.
