MIAMI (September 29, 2017) -- FIU swimming and diving finally hits the pool in an anticipated opening-meet, as the Panthers battle the Miami (Fla.) Hurricanes Saturday at noon at the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center. FIU finished 10-3 in duals last season.
Â
The Panthers are coming off of three-consecutive Conference USA crowns and both the reigning C-USA Swimmer (
Letizia Bertelli) and Diver of the Year (
Rebecca Quesnel) return to anchor the Panthers in 2017-18.
Â
"We are excited to kick off the season," said FIU Head Coach
Randy Horner. "We have a lot of freshmen who we are eager to see in competition, but our returners are going to lead the way. We want to see competitiveness across the board and great team spirit."
Â
Nine newcomers join 22 returners to hit the water in competition this season. The Panthers waste no time getting the competitive juices flowing, with a dual Saturday, and two duals next weekend, including the FIU Fall Classic.
Â
It was a busy summer for several team members, with Quesnel competing in the 2017 Summer Senior National Diving Championships in June, and rising senior
Naomi Ruele going to the 2017 FINA World Championships in July. That followed a record five swimmers and one diver who represented FIU at the NCAA Championships in March.
