The Basics
- Joris Ahlinvi (Gujan-Mestras, France) scored the game winning goal and Santiago Patino (Orlando, Florida) chipped in with two goals on the night as the FIU men's soccer team improved to 5-1 in Conference USA play with a thrilling 3-2 come-from-behind double-overtime win over Florida Atlantic on Friday night at the FIU Soccer Stadium. The Panthers improve to 6-7 overall on the year, while the Owls drop to 2-9 overall and 1-4 in C-USA play. With the win, FIU remains in sole possession of first place in Conference USA with 15 points while No. 3 Kentucky and (11-1-1, 4-1 C-USA) and Old Dominion (8-3-2, 4-1 C-USA) share second place with 12 points each. The Panthers are the Wildcats' lone loss on the year, and FIU faces ODU in Norfolk, Virginia, on Oct. 28.

- Ahlinvi, who also had an assist on Patino's match-tying goal, took a pass from Patino and Inigo Sagarduy (Coral Gables, Fla./Belen Jesuit Prep) and fired a spectacular line drive shot, from 20 yards out, past Florida Atlantic goalkeeper, Hagay Jalon, in the 101' minute to the delight of a near capacity crowd. The score was Ahlinvi's sixth of the season. Ahlinvi nearly ended the match in the first overtime with a diving header that was punched aside by a sprawling Jalon in the 96' minute.

- Ahlinvi's heroics would not have been possible without Patino connecting on his second goal of the night, coming in the 84' minute, when he took a pass from Ahlinvi and headed the ball past Jalon less than two minutes after the Owls took 2-1 lead. It was Patino's 12th goal of the year. Patino also scored in the 62' minute on a penalty kick to tie the match at one-all, his third converted PK of the season in as many attempts.

- Florida Atlantic struck first when Alonso Camarero scored his first goal of the year on a bending free kick in the 12' minute, beating FIU goalkeeper Hugo Fauroux (Cannes, France), to put the Owls on top 1-0. After Patino's penalty kick in the 62' minute, Jean Paul Rafols got the ball past Fauroux just over 20 minutes later to put the Owls on top, but that would be short-lived with the match-tying goal coming moments later.

- As would be expected in any rivalry game things would get a bit physical, tonight's match between FIU and FAU was no different. The two sides combined for 30 fouls, nine yellow cards and two red cards in the 101 minutes of play.

- Despite not holding their first lead until the 101' minute, the Panthers certainly held the upper hand offensively, with a 25-14 shot advantage and an 11-6 edge in shots on goal.

- Patino's two goals marks his fourth multi-goal match of the season and the 11th of his career. With his assist, his five points is the most for the senior this season and the second most of his career, only behind the six he recorded scoring three goals at Marshall on Oct. 7, 2017.

- Fauroux finished the night with four saves, earning his second win of the year.

Stat of the Match
Joris Ahlinvi fired off career-highs of 11 shots and five shots on goal in the double-overtime win over Florida Atlantic. He finished the match with three points (2g, 1a).
