The Basics
- The FIU men's basketball team got 22 points from
Brian Beard, Jr. (Rancho Cucamonga, California), 18 points from
Devon Andrews (Lorain, Ohio) and a career-high 14 points from
Marcus Burwell (Richmond, Virginia), but that would not be enough as Fordham handed the Panthers a tough 83-77 loss during the first day of the Johnny Bach Classic at Rose Hill Gym in the Bronx, New York. The loss was FIU's first of the season, dropping the Panthers to 3-1 on the year. The Rams improve to 2-1.

- In addition to his team-high 22 points, Beard, Jr. also found himself in the neighborhood of a quadruple-double, chipping in with a team-high eight rebounds, seven assists and six steals.

- The Panthers shot 39.7 percent (27-for-68) from the field, including 14.3 percent (4-for-28) from behind the arc, and 67.9 percent (19-28) from there free-throw line. The Rams shot at a 43.8 percent clip (14-for-32) from the field and 83.7 percent (36-for-43) from the charity stripe, including 12-for-12 down the stretch in the last two minutes.

- The Panthers led for almost the first 14 minutes of the game, until Fordham's Nick Honor scored back-to-back baskets to give the Rams their first lead of the game, 23-22, with 6:21 left in the first stanza. Despite Burwell establishing his career-high with 14 points  in the first stanza, Fordham took a 39-26 lead into the locker room at the break.

- FIU came out after the half and used an 13-2 run to take its biggest lead of the game, 49-43, on a driving layup by Beard, Jr. with 16:21 left in the game. The Rams battled back to tie the game when Antwon Portley hit the second of two free throw to knot the game at 64-all with 6:16 left. The Panthers got the lead back to five points, 69-64, with 5:12 left when
Trejon Jacob (Raleigh, North Carolina) hit a runner in the lane. From that point on, the Rams would score 18 of the final 26 points, with 12 coming from the free-throw line, en route to the win..
