MIAMI, Florida (Dec. 21, 2018) – The FIU women's basketball team closed out the 2018 FIU Holiday Tournament with a heartbreaking double overtime loss to South Alabama on Friday.
 
With the loss, FIU is 3-9 on the season, while South Alabama is 11-0 on the year.
 
FIU was led by Chelsea Guimaraes who posted a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds and Paula Orenes who scored 20 points on the afternoon. South Alabama's Antoinette Lewis also posted a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds while Savannah Jones scored 19 points to lead the Jaguars.
 
The Panthers were off to a slow start as the Jaguars took the first quarter 16-9. FIU scored 11 points in the second quarter to close the gap, giving South Alabama a 30-20 advantage at the break.
 
FIU came out of halftime strong scoring 22 points during the third quarter to cut the South Alabama lead to three at 45-42. Starting the fourth quarter, the Panthers used a 10-3 run to take the lead at 52-48 before the Jaguars made a furious comeback to tie it up 60-60 at the end of regulation.
 
In the overtime frame, the Panthers and the Jaguars battled to a tie at 71 all. South Alabama ultimately scoring 13 points in the second overtime, giving them an 84-77 win.
