@FIUWBB Starts Weekend Road Trip at ODU Friday Morning

NORFOLK, Virginia (February 1, 2018) – FIU will finish its three-game road trip this weekend, starting with an Education Day game at Old Dominion Friday, with the tip time at 11 a.m. at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. The Conference USA game pits the 6-14 Panthers (3-4 in C-USA) against the 4-18 Monarchs, who are 2-6 in C-USA.

FIU and ODU meet for the ninth time, with the Monarchs owning a 5-3 series record, which include wins in the last four meetings. FIU is just 0-2 in Norfolk all-time, 0-1 in their only meeting as Conference USA foes, 84-49, on January 30, 2016. FIU's last win in the series was in Miami on December 21, 2005, an 80-76 result.

The Panthers and Monarchs find themselves looking up at most of the league. After winning three league games in a row, the Panthers have lost their last two to drop below .500 in the league, at 3-4. Old Dominion lost both games of their last road trip, at LA Tech and Rice. A win for ODU would give it three-straight at home. FIU is looking for its first road win of the season, and the first one out of the state of Florida since beating UTSA in Texas on February 13, 2016.

The Panthers grabbed a quick 12-point lead in the opening period at Marshall, but the Thundering Herd reeled in and defeated FIU 78-75 in Huntington, West Virginia, on Sunday. It moved FIU's record to 0-6 on the road this season and winless in their last 10 road contests. It was the second time this season that FIU scored 75-or-more points and lost the contest. The Panthers put four players in double digits, led by a game-high 24 from junior Kristian Hudson (Birmingham, Alabama). Two Panthers recorded double-doubles, with 12 points and 10 rebounds from redshirt junior Kiandre'a Pound (Gifford, Florida / Sebastian River HS) for her team-leading ninth of the season. Freshman Callie Cavanaugh (Holyoke, Massachusetts) recorded her second double-double of her career, both against Marshall, with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The Monarchs dropped both games of a weekend road trip, falling on Saturday night at Rice, 53-45. MaKalya Timmons and Victoria Morris both had 13 points to lead the team. The Monarchs held Rice to just .298 shooting in the contest, which included six blocks, but Rice shot 26 free throws to ODU's seven. The Monarchs outscored Rice by a 12-5 score in the second quarter. Rice outpaced ODU 22-9 in the fourth. Rice was only called for nine fouls in the game to ODU's 26.
